Arab League ministers meet Assad

12:00 pm on 27 October 2011

A delegation of foreign ministers from the Arab League has met President Bashar Al-Assad of Syria to try to negotiate an end to the crisis in Syria.

The BBC reports more than 3000 people have died in the unrest there since protests broke out in March.

Envoys from six nations - Qatar, Egypt, Algeria, Oman, Sudan, Yemen - arrived in Damascus on Wednesday.

Afterwards, Qatari PM Sheikh Hamad al-Thani said the meeting would continue on Sunday, 30 October.

The visit followed a call by the Arab League on 17 October for talks between the government and opposition forces to take place within 15 days.

At that meeting, the League decided not to suspend Syria from the organisation.
