UN calls for truce for 2012 Olympics

1:23 pm on 18 October 2011

The UN General Assembly has called for a truce in the world's conflicts during the 2012 Olympics.

A resolution sponsored by Britain urged members "to observe ... the Olympic Truce, individually and collectively" from the start of the Olympics to the close of the Paralympics.

The two events will be held in succession in London.

A truce has been affirmed by the UN at each Olympiad since 1994.

Monday's resolution was adopted without a vote.
