Federal govt urged to help stop Timor Sea oil leak

11:16 am on 20 October 2009

The opposition in Australia says oil is continuing to leak from a rig into the Timor Sea not because of a technological problem, but because of a lack of resources.

And it's calling on the federal government to assist the company responsible, PTTEP Australasia, by providing more people and equipment to help plug the leak.

The ABC reports the operator of the offshore rig says it will try for a fourth time to cap the leak on Thursday.

The West Atlas oil rig has been leaking oil and gas into the Timor Sea for more than eight weeks.

PTTEP Australasia has been trying to intercept the leak, 2.5km below the sea bed, and then block it by pumping it full of heavy mud.
