A fierce debate is underway in the Italian media after a court decided to put an 18-month-old girl up for adoption, having concluded her parents were too old.
The mother is 57 and the father 70.
The ruling said they had not taken into account the fact their daughter would be orphaned very young, or have to look after her elderly parents.
