A magnitude 7.6 earthquake has occurred off the Kermadec Islands. It was recorded at 7.03am (NZ time) on Thursday.
The United States Geological Survey said the quake was centred 160km east of Raoul Island in the Kermadecs, at a depth of 20km.
The US Pacific Tsunami Center issued a tsunami warning for New Zealand, the Kermadec Islands and Tonga. This has now been cancelled.
USGS has also revised the quake's magnitude downward from an earlier reading of 7.9.
GNS in New Zealand says there have been no aftershocks so far, but magnitude 7.0 earthquakes are common in the area.
The Kermadec Islands are about 1000km northeast of New Zealand.
The New Zealand Department of Conservation has eight people at its station on Raoul Island - four staff members and four volunteers.
DoC says all those on the island are safe and there was no damage.
Another quake later occurred in the same area. It was magnitude 5.3 at 9.04am and 16.8km deep.
