The former head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominic Strauss-Khan, who has been accused of the attempted rape of a hotel maid, is expected to appear in court on Friday night (NZ time).

The development comes amid speculation in the United States media that the case against him may be about to collapse.

The New York Times has reported that prosecutors have growing doubts the credibility of the maid's story.
