9:37 pm on 24 April 2011

A clean-up is underway in St Louis in the US state of Missouri after a strong tornado destroyed dozens of houses, tossed cars and knocked out power.

The powerful storm hit at 8:30 pm local time on Friday with winds of over 160 km/h.

The tornado also hit the main terminal of the city's airport, which was shut down.

The airport later reopened for a handful of arriving flights and officials expected most scheduled flights to go ahead as planned by early Sunday reports the BBC.

There were no reports of injuries or deaths despite the widespread destruction in a heavily populated area near the airport.

Pictures from television helicopters showed housing subdivisions being levelled by the storm.

Power lines were reported down across St. Louis County, cutting electricity to 37,000 households.
