The Los Angeles Times and the New York Times have each been awarded two Pulitzer Prizes for journalism.
The Los Angeles Times won the public service prize for a series exposing how some California politicians were paying themselves massive salaries.
The reports, which found officials in the town of Bell were raising property taxes and other fees to help cover their large salaries, led to some political leaders being arrested.
The newspaper won its second prize for feature photography.
The New York Times won in the commentary and international reporting categories.
In other awards, ProPublica, an non-profit online news service, won a Pulitzer for its reporting of questionable Wall Street practices that contributed to the economic meltdown in the United States.
Pulitzer Prizes are awarded annually by Columbia University in New York City to honour the best in US literature, journalism and music.
