Fatal explosion at metro in Minsk

10:23 pm on 12 April 2011

The death roll from an explosion that tore through a metro station in the capital of Belarus has risen to 12.

In what authorities in Minsk are calling a terror attack, 126 people are in hospital, 22 of them in critical condition.

The blast comes amid rising political tensions in the country following President Alexander Lukashenko's controversial re-election last year and also a severe economic crisis.

The BBC reports the metro station is near the presidential office. Mr Lukashenko called for a moment of silence to honour those killed in the blast at 5.55pm on Monday.

In televised remarks, Mr Lukashenko said the attack was aimed at undermining "peace and stability".

Witnesses said there was a flash and a bang as passengers got off a train which had just pulled into the Oktyabrskaya metro station in the city centre.

Mr Lukashenko has ruled the former Soviet republic since 1994.
