Military to replace some governors in Egypt

12:56 pm on 10 April 2011

The interim military government in Egypt has announced plans to replace some provincial governors appointed by former President Hosni Mubarak.

The BBC reports the move is seen as a concession to protestors demanding a faster change.

At least one person died and dozens were injured at Tahrir Square during a 2am - 5am curfew on Saturday after the army tried to clear protestors calling for Mr Mubarak and his family to be tried for corruption.

Mr Mubarak, 82, was ousted on 11 February, but many believe that military figures now overseeing a political transition are protecting him.

He and his family live in internal exile in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. They are banned from leaving Egypt.
