A woman in a jungle in northern Malaysia has rescued her husband from a tiger by clubbing the animal on its head with a large wooden soup ladle.

Tambun Gediu was hunting for squirrels near his tribal home in Perak state when he realised he was being trailed by a tiger which attacked him.

When she heard her husband's screams, Han Besau, 55, rushed out of the kitchen and hit the big cat, which fled immediately.

The injured man is receiving hospital treatment for lacerations to his face and legs. He had tried to escape by climbing a tree, but was dragged down by the tiger.

Mr Gediu told the New Straits Times newspaper that he would have been clawed to death if his wife had not arrived.
