Yemen offshoot of al Qaeda 'biggest threat' to US

The United States Congress has been told a Yemen-based offshoot of al Qaeda now represents the biggest threat to the US.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano says the threat from the troubled border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan is probably at its lowest point since the September 11 attacks in 2001, the ABC reports.

However, she warns the threat of terrorism against the US is in some ways at its most heightened state since those attacks on New York and Washington.

Ms Napolitano says the Yemeni chapter of al Qaeda led by radical US-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki now constitutes the most significant threat to the US.
