Bus blast in Philippines capital

10:16 pm on 25 January 2011

Two people have been killed and 15 injured in a blast on a bus in the Philippines.

The bus was on the main street in the main business district of Makati in the capital Manila when the explosion happened on Tuesday.

A presidential spokesman says the blast was caused by an explosive device placed on the bus, Reuters reports.

He had said earlier the explosion appeared to have been caused by a mechanical or electrical fault.

Several rebel groups have been battling the Phillipines' government for years and some have set off bombs in the past.

Tuesday's attack came about three months after a number of foreign embassies had warned of a heightened risk of attacks in the Philippines, including the capital.
