US pastor banned from entering Britain

The British government has banned controversial American pastor Terry Jones from entering the country.

The Florida-based pastor caused an international row last year when he announced a plan to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington in 2001.

The 58-year-old has been banned after authorities cited his "unacceptable behaviour", the BBC reports.

The pastor has been invited to speak at a rally organised by far-right group The English Defence League.

Mr Jones has insisted that he is not against Islam and wants to visit his daughter who lives in Britain.

The Home Office said Mr Jones could not enter the country as the government "opposes extremism in all its forms".

Mr Jones is pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, which has fewer than 50 members.

Plans for his "International Burn a Koran Day" was condemned internationally and sparked many demonstrations before the pastor eventually called off the protest.
