French Polynesia has made the longest flower lei, Guinness World Records has confirmed.

It recognises last September's effort to string together a 2695-metre lei of tiare flowers, beating Hawaii's previous record by more than 1km, Radio New Zealand International reports.

The record was set in the Paofai garden in Tahiti and was achieved when Miss Polynesia 2010 Mihilani Teixeira tied the last knot.
