6:54 am on 4 January 2011

About 27 people have died in India where several states are experiencing one of the coldest winters on record.

Most of the deaths were in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The cold is being felt most intensely in Kashmir with the summer capital, Srinagar, recording sub-zero temperatures. A temperature of minus 23.6 degrees Celsius was reported on Sunday.

Officials said the highway linking Kashmir with the rest of India is shut due to snowfall.

Other states feeling the cold are Haryana and the Punjab.

The BBC reports Delhi is also badly hit by thick fog.
