Toyota pays millions to settle wrongful death lawsuit

Toyota has agreed to pay millions to settle a lawsuit brought in the United States by the family of four people whose fatal car wreck helped spark the automaker's wide-ranging safety recall.

A judge has denied a motion by both sides to keep the amount of the $13 million payment secret.

The wrongful death suit was part of a wave of product-liability and wrongful-death actions brought against Toyota over complaints of sudden unintended acceleration in its vehicles.

The crash in August last year renewed government scrutiny of safety problems that led to the recall of millions of Toyota vehicles.

Toyota agreed this week to pay a $21 million fine to settle US allegations that it did not notify federal safety regulators of the full scope of the problem in a timely manner.
