At least 32 people - all women and children - have been killed when a boat capsized on a river in northeastern Bangladesh.

The boat, carrying dozens of labourers, hit a cargo ship and sank in the middle of the river Surma, 240km northeast of the capital Dhaka at about 9pm on Saturday.

Police say at least 16 women and 16 children are dead and are trying to find out if more people are missing.

The incident happened in a remote area which will take hours for officials to reach.
