Heavy snow in Britain

10:24 pm on 18 December 2010

Heavy snow continues to fall in parts of Britain.

Conditions in Northern Ireland are said to be the worst in 25 years.

Police are warning against non-essential travel there and in parts of Scotland.

At least 800 schools in Wales, 500 in Scotland and 700 in Northern Ireland were closed on Friday.

Friday was due to be the last day of term in many schools, but hundreds closed their doors early because of the weather.

More snow is forecast later in western areas and 25cm is possible on Saturday in Wales and southern England.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for heavy snow in many places.

Disruption is possible at Gatwick, Heathrow and Cardiff airports.
