The number of people known to have died of cholera in Haiti is nearing 300.

Health officials say 292 people have died in the outbreak, the BBC reports.

More than 4000 patients are being treated for the intestinal infection, which is spread by bacteria in contaminated food or water.

The World Health Organisation has warned that the epidemic has not yet reached its peak, although the death rate has slowed.
