Yacht drama ends in Brisbane

7:25 am on 26 October 2010

A stand-off in Brisbane ended on Monday night when a New Zealand man poured diesel over his yacht, set it alight, stabbed himself with a bayonet, and jumped into the Brisbane River.

The man, named by the Courier Mail newspaper as Nicholas Williams, 54, called police at 5am (AEST), threatening to harm himself.

A 100 metre cordon was set up in the city centre at a City Cat terminal as police tried to negotiate with him. The yacht was between two Brisbane City Council ferries.

The ABC reports the drama ended at about 9pm AEST with the man igniting himself and the yacht and jumping into the water.

He was taken to hospital, with chest and stomach wounds.
