Megi now over China

3:32 pm on 25 October 2010

Typhoon Megi has been downgraded to a tropical depression after making landfall in south-east China.

Megi is the strongest storm to hit the north-west Pacific in 20 years.

It killed 36 people in the Philippines last week, leaving at least 13 dead and more than two dozen missing in Taiwan.

The ABC reports torrential rain is falling in the Fuijan and Zhejiang provinces of China.

Seventy-nine flights were cancelled in the coastal city of Xiamen on Saturday due to the typhoon.

The Xinhua news agency said Megi came ashore in Zhangzhou City at 0455 GMT on Saturday.
