Swarm of bees delays Currie Cup semi-final

12:00 pm on 17 October 2010

A swarm of bees delayed the start of the Currie Cup rugby semi-final between the Natal Sharks and the Blue Bulls at Kings Park in Durban on Saturday.

Referee, Marius Jonker, who is allergic to bees, noticed the swarm, which had congregated around plastic posts on the halfway line shortly before kickoff.

The players left the field and the game eventually started 40 minutes late.

A variety of different methods were unsuccessfully used, including leaf blowers and fire extinguishers, to remove the bees - until the posts were covered with plastic bags and taken away.

In the end, the Sharks beat the defending champions.
