Two earthquakes off Indonesia

5:03 pm on 30 September 2010

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake has occurred near the south coast of Papua in Indonesia.

The US Geological Survey reported on Wednesday that it occurred a minute after a magnitude 6.6 quake a few miles away.

The second quake was centered 109km northwest of Dobo, in the Aru Islands, very close to the first quake. It was 12.4km deep and occurred at 2.11am local time on Thursday.

It is not yet known whether the quakes caused any damage or casualties.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says the quakes did not trigger an ocean-wide tsunami warning.
