Northern Territory police have called for calm in a remote part of Central Australia where residents are in lockdown.

Police said on Wednesday that up to 50 people were in the streets of Yuendumu, about 300km north-west of Alice Springs, and many were armed.

Five cars and a house were set alight.

The ABC reports there has been unrest in the community since the stabbing death of a man.

Acting Senior Sergeant Shaun Gill said groups of up to 50 people had been involved in fighting. Some were armed with sticks, iron bars, spears and nulla-nullas.
