Curfew in place in Kashmir

10:35 am on 15 September 2010

A curfew is in place in Indian-administered Kashmir after 19 people were killed in anti-government protests on Monday.

The BBC reports the airport in the capital, Srinagar, is closed and all flights to the Kashmir Valley are suspended for the first time in more than 10 years.

Despite warnings that police had been instructed to shoot on sight, protesters in one town pelted security personnel with stones.

More than 80 people have been killed this summer in widespread anti-government demonstrations.

Police shot dead 18 civilians on Monday in the deadliest day since the Kashmir protests erupted three months ago. A policeman was also killed when he was run over by a lorry.
