The governor of American Samoa, Togiola Tulafono, has declared 29 September a holiday in the territory.

He says the holiday remembers the lives lost and those whose lives remain forever changed, because of last year's earthquake and tsunami.

Thirty two people died in American Samoa as a result of the disasters.

Lives were also lost in Samoa and Tonga when a magnitude 8.1 earthquake occurred, followed by a tsunami which generated 12 metre high waves.
