Guilty plea suggestion by Christmas Day bomber

A man charged with trying to blow up an American plane near Detroit on Christmas Day has suggested he wants to plead guilty to some charges.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, of Nigeria is being held six charges, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Abdulmutallab tried to detonate a bomb sewn into his underwear as his flight from Amsterdam approached Detroit airport on Christmas Day.

In a federal court on Monday, he told judge Nancy Edmunds that he wants to fire his lawyers and represent himself.

She advised him not to but when he insisted, the judge granted his request and then asked him if he had anything further to say.

"If I want to plead guilty to some counts, basically, how would that go?" Abdulmutallab asked.

The judge told him she could not advise him on such matters.

Another court hearing is set for the middle of next month.
