Another shark attack in Sydney waters

8:12 pm on 13 February 2009

An Australian surfer has had his hand almost ripped off in the second shark attack in Sydney waters this week.

The incident happened on Thursday night at Bondi Beach. It is the first attack there in 80 years and follows the mauling of a navy diver in Sydney Harbour on Wednesday.

Surfer James McIntosh came to the aid of the shark attack victim, named only as Glenn, after a group of other surfers signalled to him.

Mr McIntosh says he grabbed the victim's leg rope and used it as a tourniquet around his arm to stop further blood loss.

The 33-year-old was rushed to St Vincent's Hospital, where he underwent 10 hours of surgery and remains in a serious but stable condition.
