Six security guards have been beheaded during a bank robbery in northern Afghanistan.

Almost $US300,000 was taken from a branch of the Kabul Bank in Mazar-e-Sharif on Monday night.

The BBC reports the guards' kebabs had been poisoned beforehand. The bank is near a police checkpoint.

AMazar-e-Sharif is the regional capital of Balkh province, which is regarded as one of Afghanistan's most peaceful areas.
