Quake off the Philippines but no damage reported

9:50 pm on 24 July 2010

A strong earthquake and a series of aftershocks struck off the southern Philippines on Saturday, but officials say they occurred at such great depths that their impact dissipated.

There were no reports of casualties or damage, and no tsunami warnings were issued.

In just over an hour early on Saturday, the US Geological Survey recorded an earthquake and two aftershocks at magnitudes of 7.3 to 7.6, at considerable depths of between 576 and 617 km southwest of Cotabato on Mindanao island.

Another aftershock of 6.2 magnitude was measured in the same area at 1:35pm (local time) on Saturday.
