7:21 am on 14 July 2010

The ABC is to launch a new 24 hour news station on free-to-air digital television on 22 July. It will be known as ABC News 24.

The ABC says the new channel will deliver continuous, live and commercial-free coverage of major breaking news stories in Australia and around the world.

It will take advantage of the ABC's existing news operation, including more than 800 journalists in 60 locations in Australia and a dozen international bureaux.

A new state-of-the-art studio has been built in the foyer of the ABC's headquarters in Sydney.
