A New Zealand born man faces up to 12 years in an Indonesian jail after being caught with cocaine in Bali.

Police say Angus McCaskill, 57, was arrested on Wednesday in a supermarket in Tuban, near Bali's international airport.

They say they seized six packets of cocaine weighing a total of 3.58 grams, which were hidden in his wallet.

Police say Mr McCaskill, who calls Melbourne home, has been living in Bali for the past several months.

He is in police detention and likely to be charged with drug possession.

Officials from Australia's Bali consulate are assisting him.
