The head of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Sharon Burrow, is promising big changes when she takes the helm of the global union movement.

The ABC reports Ms Burrow has been elected unopposed to a four-year term as the general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, which is based in Brussels.

She will be the first woman and the first Australian to take up the post, after heading the ACTU for 10 years.

Miss Burrow says the confederation has set a clear mandate and is promising to work more closely with industrial sector unions.
