Michael Jackson's father has sued the doctor charged with giving the late pop star a lethal dose of sedatives a year ago.

Joe Jackson filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Los Angeles on Friday seeking damages from Dr Conrad Murray.

The suit was filed on the first anniversary of the singer's death. Damages of more than $US75,000 are sought.

The case will run parallel with a criminal trial against Dr Murray, which is expected to begin next year. Dr Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Dr Murray was treating Jackson as he prepared for a series of concerts in London.

Jackson died on 25 June, 2009, aged 50. His family and friends have been holding candle-lit vigils at his family home in Los Angeles at at the ceremony where he is buried.

Fans have gathered around the world paying tribute to Jackson, burning candles, dancing and singing his songs.

Biggest selling artist in UK

Jackson has been named as the biggest selling artist in the UK since his death last year, with 4.3 million sales.

That exceeds his chart performance during his 1980s heyday, the Official Chart Company has said.

Earlier this week, Billboard magazine reported that Jackson's estate has made more than $US1 billion since his death.

The magazine said album sales had generated about $US383 million while revenue from the film This Is It was almost $US400 million.

The BBC reports profits from publishing rights, licensing and touring were included in the total.
