US court overturns Monsanto seed ban

10:52 am on 22 June 2010

The United States Supreme Court has ruled that American bio-tech company Monsanto can sell genetically modified alfalfa seeds, before the potential environmental consequences are known.

A lower court had barred the sale of the modified alfalfa seeds until an environmental impact study could be carried out, but seven of the nine Supreme Court Justices decided that ruling was unconstitutional.

The seed is modified to be resistant to Monsanto's brand of weedkiller, the BBC reports.

Alfalfa (lucerne) is the fourth-largest cash crop in the United States.
