Senior politician quits over gay rent expenses

A senior member of Britain's new coalition government has quit after admitting he claimed expenses to pay rent to his gay partner.

Liberal Democrat MP David Laws has resigned as Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

He had earlier apologized and said he would pay back the money which the Daily Telegraph newspaper said totalled $85,000.

The coalition was formed days after the Conservatives won the most seats in this month's election, ousting Labour from power after 13 years in government.
