Hong Kong 'democracy' by-election held

9:20 pm on 16 May 2010

A by-election is underway in Hong Kong aimed at putting pressure on mainland China to provide full democracy.

Five opposition activists triggered the vote by resigning from their posts in the Legislative Council in January.

The activists said they wanted to win back their seats by pushing the issue universal suffrage for the election of Hong Kong's chief executive and representatives.

But the BBC reports the campaign faltered when the main Democrat party didn't join them, and their opponents in the pro-Beijing parties also refused to stand against them.
