The Maoist party in Nepal has ended a national strike against the government.

Party leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal said other forms of protest would continue.

The BBC reports the former rebel group has brought the country to a virtual standstill, in an attempt to force the government to resign.

Transport, schools and businesses were closed in Kathmandu and other cities and tourists evacuated.

The party is demanding the government's resignation. The Maoists are the largest party in parliament.
