Turnbull to stay in politics

1:59 pm on 1 May 2010

Former Australian Opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull has announced he will no longer be retiring from politics and will contest this year's federal election.

Mr Turnbull announced on his website in early April that he would quit federal politics at the next election.

However, the ABC reports he reversed that decision on Saturday because of a groundswell of support.

Mr Turnbull said he had withdrawn his resignation and will again contest the Sydney seat of Wentworth at this year's election. He has held the seat since 2004.

Mr Turnbull was leader of the opposition for 11 months, from September 2008.

He was replaced by Tony Abbott as Opposition Leader in December last year after Liberal MPs revolted against his stance on emissions trading.

The federal government has now shelved its plans for an emissions trading scheme.
