Athletes may not be able to eat beef at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

The Indian capital is preparing to host more than 100,000 foreign visitors for the Games, to be held from October 3-14.

India's main opposition party, the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, wants to ban beef from the menu to showcase the country's cultural values and age-old traditions, Reuters reports.

The cow is worshipped in India and a majority of Hindus do not eat beef.

The slaughter of cattle is also banned in several states.
