Gunmen killed as Kashmir hotel stormed

3:58 pm on 8 January 2010

Security forces have stormed a hotel in Indian-administered Kashmir and killed two gunmen who had taken over the premises for nearly 24 hours.

The pair had earlier attacked a busy market in the state capital, Srinagar, with grenades and guns, killing a civilian bystander and a police officer.

The BBC reports that they subsequently entered the hotel, in the Lal Chowk area, and exchanged fire with security forces.

This is the first major militant attack in Srinagar in two years. Violence there has declined in recent years.

Officials say that one of the gunmen belonged to the banned Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba but there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack so far.
