Two blasts at Afghan police HQ

8:53 am on 8 September 2008

Two suicide bombers detonated explosives inside police headquarters in the Afghan city of Kandahar on Sunday, killing two policemen and wounding 35 people.

One blew himself up in the main building by stairs leading to the police chief's office, while the other set off his explosives in the compound.

Earlier, a suicide bomber blew himself up in an attack on an Italian convoy in western Herat.

Kandahar is one of the key battlegrounds of an insurgency against the Afghan government.

In June, at least 350 rebels were freed during a jailbreak from Kandahar jail.

There are about 70,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, most of them serving under NATO command.
