South African doctors have successfully performed the world's first penis transplant - on a young man who had an amputation after a botched circumcision ritual.
Details are just being released about the nine-hour transplant in December.
The doctors say the results are better than expected with the young man already recovering all functions.
The transplant is part of a pilot study by a university and hospital in Cape Town, to help the 250 young South African men each year who lose their penises in traditional coming-of-age rituals.
Each year, thousands of young South African men, mainly from the Xhosa tribe, mark their passage into manhood with the rituals, but hundreds are injured or killed.
