An overweight man has been charged with animal abuse in southern Spain after a young donkey died just days after he sat on it at an outdoor nativity scene.
The five-month-old donkey, Platero, was on display in the town of Lucena as part of annual Christmas celebrations, AAP reported.
But earlier this month a man weighing nearly 150kg climbed on to the donkey's back to have his picture taken.
Animal rights groups said the donkey lost the ability to stand within two days and died despite efforts by a local vet.
