El Salvador quake kills at least one

6:31 pm on 14 October 2014

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake off the coast of El Salvador and Nicaragua has killed at least one person, but there are no immediate reports of major damage.

The shallow quake, at a depth of 40 kilometres, was felt across Central America.

El Salvador's emergency services urged people living near the coast to move inland after placing a tsunami alert in effect but say coastal areas remained calm.

The mayor of San Miguel in El Salvador said on Twitter account a man was killed when an electricity post fell on him.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center at one point warned of possible tsunami waves in the region but then said there was no threat.
