Plane crashes into Melbourne house

5:07 pm on 14 October 2014

A person has been killed after a light plane crashed into a house near The Strand at Chelsea in Melbourne's south-east.

A woman who was inside the house at the time has been treated for shock and minor injuries.

The police said a small fire had been put out at the house.

Police received numerous calls from people saying a small aircraft appeared to be experiencing engine problems before it plummeted into the property this afternoon, the ABC reported.

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) also said it received multiple calls about a plane being in difficulty.

Emma Maddocks, who works at a dental practice two doors away from the crash, said she could hear the plane droning as it approached the house.

She then heard suddenly a big bang.

Ms Maddocks thought the plane was trying to land on the beach but did not make it.

"We heard a big bang that shook the whole building," she said.

"There were lots of bricks and fire."

She said the plane went into the side of the house from a side laneway.

She said the residents were at home at the time of the crash and she saw them walking outside as emergency crews arrived.
