Ireland has been shocked by the revelation that human remains discovered in a septic tank are those of nearly 800 children from a former home for unmarried mothers run by the Catholic Church.
The children, aged between two days and nine years old, died between 1925 and 1961 when the County Galway home was under the care of nuns.
The mass grave was originally discovered 40 years ago, but the remains were long thought to be those of victims of the 1850s Irish famine, the BBC reports.
However, a local historian has established their true identity. Most of the children appear to have died of sickness or disease.
The Irish government is considering an inquiry.
