A 6.9-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of northern California.

The US Geological Survey says it happened late on Sunday (local time), and the epicentre was 77km west-northwest of the town of Ferndale at a depth of 7km.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, but the quake was felt as far away as San Francisco, about 400km south of Ferndale, AFP reports.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no widespread destructive tsunami threat.
