Efforts are underway to get a man home to Mexico, after he washed up in a boat on a Marshall Islands atoll last week.

Shark fisherman, Jose Salvador Alvarenga, 37, has given more details of his 13,000km voyage from the coast of Mexico, which he says began in December 2012.

He and a friend were on a fishing trip when winds swept their boat into the Pacific Ocean.

He says he tried to force raw meat from birds and turtles into his teenage companion, who could not bear the smell and kept vomiting.

The friend eventually died four months into the trip.

Marshall Islands officials say they will be working with the United States Embassy on transit visas for Mr Albarenga, to get him home.
